Contrary to popular belief,
trickery is obviously
a heroic quality in The Odyssey: Odysseus
uses it, Telemachos uses it, Athene
uses it, and most importantly, Penelope uses it.
Despite the fact that The Odyssey is
primarily Odysseus's story, Penelope emerges as the
true hero of the story.
Even though Homer's world was male-dominated,
Homer himself shows women to be the true
heroes of their society. Why?
One could conclude that Homer was a man
ahead of his time, a feminist before the
word was even invented.
Whether this is true or not, we may never
know.
