CourseThemes

 

This course will explore the development of European Western culture between about 1400 and 1660.  It will focus on the emergence of 4 key themes that are central to modern Western society: 1) the questioning of legitimate political authority, 2) the origins of cultural relativity and pluralism, 3) the reformation and marginalization of religion, 4) the development of individual identity.

 

Course Requirements

 

  1. There will be 2 essays of 5-7 pages.  Essays will be submitted in a manila folder along with your Hum. 1 and 2 essays at the beginning of lecture on the dates due.  Late essays will be graded down 1/3 grade for each day late and 1 full grade for a weekend.  All assignments must be turned in to pass the course.
  2. Preparation of assigned readings by the date specified on the syllabus.
  3. Preparation for section meetings and participation in discussions.
  4. Final Exam.
